History of the Route: The Footbridge

Our Campaign: The Footbridge Today

Unfortunately, in the mid-1950s, British Rail ‘temporarily’ closed the footbridge to save on costs. They could not ‘permanently’ close it due to the legal requirement to maintain this link from the 1891 Act. Some years later, the links between the roof of Waverley Station and Jeffrey Street and Calton Road were removed. The photos below show what remains of the footbridge. With Network Rail’s plan to re-roof Waverley (and remove all remains of the footbridge), now is the time to demand the full re-instatement of this historic link.

View of the full length of the footbridge in Waverley Station roof from North Bridge. The footbridge is obvious as it is the only part of the roof that is not made of transparent glass. (photo by Jolin Warren)

The footbridge was accessed by a link from the entrance which has since been removed and the opening bricked up. The podium that supported the link is still standing (and provides a bit of greenery!) and the door to the footbridge in the roof can still be seen. (photo by Jolin Warren)
